Featured in the bottom right of the painting you will see myself and friends enjoying the best party of our art school time. We are all dressed up for the Roald Dahl themed Revel. We are a swan, golden ticket, bubble gum girl and a ladybird... not the most ladylike of Ladybirds! Revel continues today. If you're studying there, start planning that costume now. This tradition goes back generations through the art school’s history.
The impressive list of alumni illustrated includes the internationally acclaimed Elizabeth Blackadder. Blackadder retired from teaching at ECA in 1986, which is the year I was born. Aileen Paterson is the celebrated writer and illustrator of Maisie Mackenzie, the Scottish kitten books whose humours and warm stories have a fond place in Edinburgh’s collective childhood. Finally, artist Rachel Maclean represented Scotland in 2017’s Venice Biannale , I went along to support her with the group of friends featured.
Created for the “Crag & Tale” exhibition which encouraged illustrators to look at Edinburgh from a different perspective. Curated by Nicky Brooks at the Red Door Gallery you can read more about this exhibition here.
A3 prints of this design are available here.
